Hey Ken awesome to have you back. I see you changed sites so can you add jta downloaded and the original JTA course to my area? As I was in those courses before. Your lessons are always beneficial! Thanks.

REPLY

Ken Cannon

Thanks Tyshawn! Of course, you should have access to both now. Sorry about the confusing site change.

Hey Ken. I'm so glad to see you back! I found out about you during the time of your JTA platinum course, but at the time I couldn't bring about the money. I think It was about a year later that a new deal of some sort came out and I jumped on it. Honestly though, my timing was bad and I... didn't finish what I started. I'm back though and this time, with the support of you and the others here, I'll be able to reach my goal of speaking properly without sounding like a bumbling 2 year old.

REPLY

Ken Cannon

Oh no, well no worries this time around we'll make sure to reach that goal! hahah.

So hey Ken!!!!
I haven't really commented or said anything before but since I'm part of the founder team now why not right?! Well first of all this JTA is such a wonderful idea and for a college student like myself I'm speechless. When you were listing the prices on the video I thought yep it's still gonna be like a $100 but $10!!!!!!
Even before now I always looked forward to your email and a remember when you send an email after so long I was literally yelling everywhere "He's Alive!!! Ken is alive" so people must have though I was crazy yes! But I was just excited and now I'm just as excited to be a part of the founder members and to finally learn fluent Japanese!!!!!

To Ken,
I am happy and excited to have this chance to learn once again from Ken. I want to say that I am thrilled to see that you are working through your obstacles and finding your way back to us. You have always put a smile on my face and given me the drive and desire to continue trying to learn Japanese.
To everyone else,
I want to thank all of you for believing and standing by Ken. I know that dealing with mental illness is difficult and that many people will look to the negative instead of trying to understand. My daughter is struggling with social anxiety and I have been healing from PTSD so I do understand how overwhelming life can be and to have the faith and support of others when you are at your highest and lowest can make all the difference in the world between choosing to live through it or allowing it to control you.
Ken you are such an inspiration to many people. Too many people give up because they lose their spark. You have been knocked down by life so many times. Always remember that we love you for your flaws way more than your perfections because if you never make a mistake, you never learn anything.
Much love
Leona

Ken Cannon

Oh my gosh!! Thank you so much Leona! That was so incredibly kind of you!! I really appreciate it. And I do hope your daughter is doing ok! As well as yourself, my mom also suffers from PTSD (bad hit&run car accident) so ive seen first hand at how tough it is.

This might be something a bit forward to ask as soon as I subscribed to this course, but I do want to have it known just in case, but where would I go to get a refund for this course, as you did promise a 90 day payback guarantee, so as someone who is kinda skeptical about a paid course like this, I want to make sure I have my back-up plan sorted, although I'm sure based on what I've read about in these comments that I wouldn't have to do that, but I always like to plan ahead for outcomes.

Of course, I understand. To refund, all you have to do is email me at [email protected]. But if you just wanted to cancel, theres a self cancel button up in your account settings in the top right hand corner on this page. Hope that helps!

Hello, I've just joined as soon as I got home from work.
I work quite a lot during the week for someone as weak as me, and it's tiring. But I will do my best to keep up with these lessons on my days off and when I get off work.
I'm not the most punctual student, and earlier this year, I retook Japanese 1B at my local community college, paid over 200 bucks for my course, and still halfway through the semester I stopped showing up because I couldn't bother to keep up with the homework and dropped out altogether.
My studies in the language have pretty much halted.
But now, I'm fired up and ready to get in there. Looking in these comments now, I see people with the same motivations as me and it's bringing a warm feeling.
Again, I might not be able to keep up daily, but I hope to try my best.
Thank you, Mr. Cannon!

Hello and thank you for the opportunity! I am a subscriber of the newsletter since a long time and I always wanted to be part of JTA community and I am glad you want to revive your dream and here I am! I couldn't afford the yearly subscription because I am brazillian and the USD to BRL conversion is not a happy one. But from your long video explaining what this is all about and the fair monthly price you asked for you earned my trust and I hope to have a good time learning with you. I tried to self-study so many times and I always fail. Thank you and I am exciting to start!

Hi! Glad to see you're posting again. I was using your program before I left to go to Japan...was learning a little then you left...I was in Japan for a little over 4yrs and you were doing a little bit but then left completely. Lol, now I'm back in the states and here you are back again. Well, I did take some college beginners Japanese while I was there and it helped to actually use it with someone who spoke Japanese to help get the flow going and now that I'm not there I don't feel I have the resources to converse with someone to practice the language. It would be great if I could talk to my Japanese friends in their language but due to time differences and life it would be hard to coordinate.

I wanted to check if there where new videos on JTA Downloaded since last time I logged on, but couldn't seem to find the page. I tried http://jtadownloaded.kajabi.com/dashboard which was linked in my old emails, but just got a "We can’t connect to the server". Is it the wrong address or is it currently down?
Can I still access the material somewhere? =)

Thijs Fatels

It seems it has been moved to this page: https://japanesethroughanime.mykajabi.com/library . For me it shows all three JTA's even though I'm currently on the domain www.japanesethroughanimeclass.com . Apparently both domain names refer to the same server or something; only the domain jtadownloaded.kajabi.com is no longer available. I hope you can access it through the new page.

Anime is a great learning tool (why I even got this course, haha), but as I self-studied, I realized that dramas can also be really great at reinforcing Japanese conversation points and grammar and vocab. Though I know this is Japanese Through ANIME and not Drama, inserting a few lessons here and there when applicable using a drama (Hana Yori Dango?) would be a pleasant surprise.

REPLY

Joel Perez

That was a great series. Funny you mention it, the reason I watched it was because someone from the first JTA class way back when recommend me to watch it. It would be awesome to have something for that show. Or better yet, maybe as student we can make our own scripts in romaji so others can read the script and we can use it as practice. Like a big group project. Dunno something like that lol. I’m no Ken =]

REPLY

Horace Yao

Scripting is cool and all and I'm down for that, but I'd prefer not using any romaji at all -- romaji isn't technically 'japanese' after all, and most people should be able to get at least the hiragana and katakana letters memorized in a month or two.

Doing a big project with HanaDan sounds like a cool idea though! It's my favorite show.

REPLY

Joel Perez

Yeah true lol. Hey we should probably do furigana so that we have the Kanji with the hira/kata over it so we can sound them out etc. I think that would kill 3 birdies with one stone. It would add a whole lot more Kanji to our studies. What do you think?

REPLY

Horace Yao

Yeah, adding furigana to the kanji would allow people who don't know how to pronounce the kanji would be useful. Later on though, those people would have to distinguish between the on'yomi readings and the kun'yomi readings. But it's a great idea and I think after some time we should definitely add this part in to Tsunami.

Interesting start, subbed to crunchyroll too so that I can watch more anime :).

Noticed choujin shakai was incorrectly labelled chojin shakai at one point, so watch out for that. I hate romaji and would much prefer kana, but I get why it's helpful to beginners! I'd appreciate furigana with the kanji.

Also, I quite liked the skits, but can we have a bit more variery. I'm done with gags about your 'kosei' already!

Sorry if I repeat anything that anyone else has mentioned.
The best thing about the lesson was watching you as it was quite obvious that your shine and sparkle has returned. I could see how excited you are for this new project and that was heartwarming.
May I suggest that in the beginner lessons you have romaji, kana, and kanji in the cards and that for the intermediate you drop the romaji, and in the advanced you drop the kana.
I would also ask that you repeat or add the sentence translation at the end. There were a few new words and when you added a new sentence structure you explained everything but dropped the actual translation. I guessed at the meaning and would have liked a way to check to see if I was correct.
Also, one small error. In the video with Hitobito wo mamoru you said "you're saving the peoples," instead of you're protecting the peoples.
You may want to slow down the speed a little for the beginner section as sometimes it is hard to pick up the nuances and the pronunciation when your ear is getting used to the language.
One last comment, are you going to be putting together lesson notes to go along with the lessons?

REPLY

Ken Cannon

Aww, thank you Leona!! i do enjoy sparkling lol

And yes, got a lot of feedback about putting some kana over the kanji so that a for sure.

Also I will slow the speed a lil, and add the translations.

Oh! Nice catch, i didn't even notice that.

And yup lessons notes are on the way!

Thanks sooo much for the detailed feedback! It really does help :)

I forgot a lot of the Japanese that I learned before and this was kind of a refresher course with new words but I enjoyed the way it was taught. I just have to remember what the words means but overall it was. I agree with Eduardo that it would be helpful to watch part of the anime that uses the phrase or words. I think it would help out more.

REPLY

Ken Cannon

Thanks for the feedback Obi! Do you mind if I ask, what resources have you used to get your current level?

Obi Onyeka

Yeah. It’s been a long time but if I remember correctly I downloaded from a program some lessons on my iPod then my iPod broke but I remember some words like arigato and to add gozamasu I think I spelled it right. I also still your welcome, hi, good morning, goodnight, and I still remember how to count to ten but I can never get beyond 10 and I think I still remember how to introduce myself in Japanese.

REPLY

Actually the proper spelling of "gozaimasu" is ๅพกๅบงใ„ใพใ™ or ใ”ใ–ใ„ใพใ™.

Ken, I tried replying to your reply but there isn't a send button, so I cut and pasted it here:

Actually, I could concentrate better if it were a littler lower in volume. I think the music is great when you perform your skits and antics; it complements your "quirky" personality. I think I can focus more on you and the lesson with no background music during the actual teaching session. You have excellent content and structure in your lesson plans and I don't want you to second guess that or take away from your creativity. It's quite possible that the other students have a totally different opinion or experience than me. BTW, if you need a whiteboard, email me directly, I'd be glad to send a Western Union your way to contribute to the cause.

(1) There should be a leveling lesson. Get everyone in the same base and structures of the japanese language.

(2) It would be cool to watch parts of the anime where the sentences are pulled off, so that we can get the feeling of an actual japanese actor and so we can listen to different ones saying the same sentences or adjust to hearing anime voices and then your own voice.

(3) it would also be great to have the subtitles in japanese, so we can actually match the voice speed with the required reading speed.

Enjoyed this lesson without background music to distract me. I'm having to start over again, so I consider myself at Novice level with many of the basics unlocking from memory as the lessons progress. As one of the New Founding Fathers, we will Purge English from our language. Heh heh heh. Not sure if anyone got that stupid joke or not.

lol is the music too loud? i always wonder about that. Or is it just hard to concentrate in general?

I'm still not quite sure how Facebook helps if I could just post stuff here in the comment section.

I just wanted to say that I should be an intermediate, I think, but these anime specific words are new to me and I'm not sure if I'm going to remember them unless I start watching that anime. It's like the original JTA was the Naruto course, JTA Downloaded was the One Piece course and this seems to be the Boku no Hero Academia course, I guess? So now I know what anime I should probably watch next.

I think it would also help if you put the vocabulary and grammar concepts in the description of the video. That would make it so much easier for me to quickly review them without having to watch the whole video again.

The original was Naruto? Oh, now I'm sad I missed out on it. I hope it can be made in to a somewhat lower priced set to buy down the road, since you don't get the "full experience", just videos from the past. I have the Downloaded, with One Piece, but Naruto is one of my favorite anime! It was my first, not counting Pokemon, Digimon and others I watched in English or Norwegian growing up, not knowing it was any different from other cartoons at the time. Naruto was the first I watched in Japanese, and where I fell in love with the language <3

Hehe, yeah, I already started watching Hero Academia this morning (it's on crunchyroll! <3 Makes it easy to watch legally if you have an account), and consider getting the manga too ;)
I'd like to get a confirmation that we are focusing in on this anime before purchasing the manga, but it seems likely since he went in and taught us so many series specific words like that. It wouldn't make sense to focus on those if not. Sensei and seito, sure, but those specific ones made up for the series, no =P

Edit: found Volume 1-19 at a fair enough price on eBay. I like getting complete sets if I'm gonna have any, rather than a stray one or two. One Piece I still only have the one though, random volume from somewhere further in to the series (since we where using that specific one only in the JTA Downloaded)
I'm already focusing a lot on reading, so even though I still have mangas left to read I don't mind getting a new series, will even prioritize it (after reading group material. Currently reading Yostuba and Aria with some other people =) Free to join if anyone is interested, it's in the WaniKani forum (you don't have to be a paying member to be in the forum) )

Thanks for the feedback Thijs! tThe only anime specific word that I would recommend not learning in "mukosei" and "villian rengou" everything else is used pretty often in general.

And yes I will put the words and a review in the description in the future, this week im just rushing around this the founder members launch is still going on, so much to do.

I Just thought of a horrible star wars joke using chou. "What would you not want to call Chewbacca? Chou baka"

When doing Kanji through WaniKani they use mnemonics, and one of them IS Chewbacca ;)
It's for the sound Chuu ใกใ‚…ใ† like in ไธญ (middle)
So you can get even closer and say chuu baka =)

Just a small thing ken, when a lesson is done there’s a button that says complete, which makes it sound like you need to click it to complete the lesson. Obviously that’s not the case, it’s supposed to let you know that the lesson is *completed* so I’d recommend maybe changing it to say so? I’ve clicked it more than once already in confusion. Thanks Ken
